🚆 Park & Ride Parking
Park & Ride car parks are parking areas located near train stations, bus stations or other public transport hubs, designed to make it easier to combine private vehicles and public transport.
These car parks allow users to leave their vehicle near the station and continue their journey by public transport, improving access to the transport network and reducing the need to drive into the most congested urban areas.
With Parkunload, local authorities and transport operators can digitize the regulation, validation, enforcement and monitoring of Park & Ride car parks, reserving parking spaces for genuine public transport users.
🚗 What is a Park & Ride car park?
A Park & Ride car park, also known as a commuter or interchange car park, allows users to park their private vehicle near a station or transport interchange and continue their journey using public transport.
The aim is to facilitate intermodal mobility by combining different modes of transport and providing a convenient alternative for reaching city centres, business areas and other destinations connected by public transport.
The conditions of use depend on the regulations established for each car park. The relevant local authority or operator determines the authorized vehicles and users, regulated hours, maximum parking time and, where applicable, the validation system.
🅿️ Who can park at a Park & Ride?
Park & Ride car parks managed with Parkunload may be reserved exclusively for public transport users.
The regulations for each car park may establish different categories of authorized users and vehicles. These may include:
- Train, bus or other public transport passengers who use the car park as an interchange point.
- Other authorized users where permitted by the specific regulations of the car park.
When the car park is managed with Parkunload, the app displays the parking conditions applicable to the selected vehicle and parking area.
⏱️ How long can you park at a Park & Ride?
The maximum parking time depends on the regulations established for each Park & Ride car park.
These car parks generally allow users to park for the entire day, within the regulated hours, so that they can make their outbound and return journeys using public transport.
Regulated hours may vary depending on the municipality, station, day of the week, public holidays or special periods. When the car park is digitized with Parkunload, the app displays the parking conditions applicable to the selected vehicle and parking area.
Reserved for public transport users: Park & Ride parking requires users to validate their parking session inside the station to confirm that they are actually using public transport.
✅ How is Park & Ride parking validated?
To ensure that parking spaces remain available for genuine public transport users, Parkunload can incorporate a parking validation system.
At car parks using this system, the process consists of two steps:
- Start parking: the user parks the vehicle at the Park & Ride and starts a parking session using the Parkunload app.
- Validation at the station: after entering the station, the user approaches the validation point located in the concourse, beyond the access gates or on the platform, depending on the configuration of each station.
The app automatically detects the validation point via Bluetooth and confirms that the user has entered the public transport infrastructure.
To validate correctly, Bluetooth and precise location must be enabled on the phone, and the user must move to within 1 metre of the validation sensor.
At car parks where validation is required, if the user does not validate the parking session within the specified period, the parking authorization may be automatically cancelled. Currently, in the systems described by Parkunload, this period is 20 minutes from the start of the parking session.
Once validation has been successfully completed, the app shows the parking session as active and the user can leave the vehicle parked until the limit established by the regulations.

Parkunload makes it possible to digitize the management of Park & Ride car parks by connecting physical signage, the driver app, validation points, enforcement tools and local authority management in a single platform.
For drivers, the process is simple:
- The user parks the vehicle in a designated Park & Ride car park.
- The Parkunload app identifies the parking area and displays the applicable parking conditions.
- The user starts the parking session.
- When required, the user validates the parking session inside the station at the corresponding validation point.
